Our Programs

The Bureau of Indian Education provides a wide-range of educational programs and services in order to meet its historic responsibilities to American Indian children and to meet the three BIE goals for that will ensure our students will "Learn Today, Lead Tomorrow."

Educational programs are provided either directly by BIE or through grants and contracts to tribes who choose to operate the educational programs themselves. Educational services are available not only to babies and their families, but also to older adults seeking to improve their literacy skills or to improve their job skills like learning how to use computers.

Current programs include:

Adult Education
The Adult Education program provides educational opportunities for adult American Indians/Alaska Natives who lack the level of literacy skills for productive employment.

Higher ED
Higher ED Grants are provided to supplement financial assistance to eligible American Indian/Alaska Native students entering college seeking a baccalaureate degree.

Johnson O'Malley (JOM)
The Johnson-O'Malley Program is designed to meet the specialized and unique educational needs of eligible American Indian students attending public schools.

Pre-Kindergarten - Grade 12
BIE promotes a school-wide approach in which schools have the flexibility to combine resources to upgrade and improve the entire school program in order to increase student academic achievement for ALL students.

Technology
BIE seeks to provide the best possible technologies to support student academic achievement, to provide professional development for teaching staff, and to strengthen American Indian.
